Oriental Art Essays - Chinese Pottery, Ceramic Art, Ceramics
Oriental Art Oriental art is very distinct from other parts of the world. In their sculptures they still used such materials as clay, wood, and bronzes. However there art work promoted such things as goodness in nature, serenity, graceful balance, spiritual perfection, and a mystical harmony within themselves. There work avoided confusion, conflict and violent emotions at all costs. New or unprecedented experiments in their art work was never welcomed, and the expression of nobility and inner worth where demanded. Ultimately oriental art was said to be a way of being, but to understand this you must look at the words of the great Chinese philosopher Confucius who said Raise yourself to the beautiful. However not all Oriental art is the same, and to see the difference and the influences of their art you need to look at the areas of China, Japan, and Korea. The Neolithic inhabitants of China were energetic in their pottery, and where the first to practice this art, in which China has remained supreme in until recent times. Not very much is known about the earliest Chinese craftsman or the society that produced them, other than the fact that they lived in pounded earth settlements in northern Honan, Shangtung, and Kansu. These early craftsman created fine pottery, and especially beautiful vessels for funerals which where used for food and other provisions for the dead. These craftsmen where taught to honor the five rulers who had taught their forefathers how to raise silk worms, catch fish, domesticate animals, plow, reap and use the wheel for transportation and for throwing pottery. The Shang people came into history half way through the second millennium B.C., these people also lived in pounded earth settlements, and made funeral vessels. These people established the li which was the basic metallic shape used in their bronzes. Not only was the li used, but also other shapes have been discovered. In recent excavations, thousands of different vessels have been found, however it is possible to distinguish about forty basic shapes of the vessels. Each vessel served a different purpose in sacrifice or funeral ceremonies. Some where used for wine and water, some for storing foods, while others where used for cooking meats. The Shang dynasty have left some sculptures as original and different as there bronzes. However none of the large statue survived excavations. The importance of the excavations cannot be overemphasized. Who would have imagined an ancient culture so rich that they actually created stone sculptures, wheel made pottery, carved jade, and bronzes, which have never been surpassed. Too often when people speak of Oriental art they think that both China and Japan developed in the same way and the same time. This statement however is false, and the Japanese art did not start till several years after Chinese art did. The first forms of Japanese art can be looked at through the Jomon people, who where nomadic hunters and fishers. A number of human figurines and fertility gods have been found, also vessels made by the coiled clay method. The name Jomon, actually means coiled rope. The figures made by these people seem to be very imaginative, and possibly inspired by a fear in supernatural forces. The figures where made to be viewed only from the front, and although there where simply molded, some did have very elaborate decorations. When contacts with Asia and China where made, the style of Buddhist art was developed. This new form inspired sculptors and painters to have totally new viewpoints on their art. The Korean society was extremely influenced by Chinese culture. This did not stop Korean artists and craftsman from making their own original and distinct contributions to the world of art. In an expedition in 1909 many tombs where unearthed. In them they found mirrors weapons, lacquer objects, pottery, and ritual jades. Most of these items however where said to be from China and this proved the close contacts between the two countries. The Great Silla period was the first and most interesting periods of Korean art. Things that where found during this period of time where openwork metal ornaments, jewelry, images and pendants, which where meant to word off evil spirits. Pottery was also very popular during

The KGB essays
The KGB essays During the Cold War not much was known about the activities of the Russian state security organization by western intelligence agencies. However after the collapse of the Soviet Union, documents that have been smuggled out by KGB agents (Wilson 1) have allowed agents to see just how much this agency knew and how far the Soviets managed to penetrate into western society. The question is where the KGB operations during the Cold War successful or not? Before the KGB, there was the Vecheka or Cheka, which was started on December 20, 1917 (Crozier 11). The Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin created the Cheka, so they would be able to combat counter revolutionary forces in Russia after the Bolsheviks took power. The man who was chosen to lead the organization was Felix Dzerzhinky, also known as Iron Felix, from Poland (11). Not long after the Cheka was founded, it sent a newspaper publisher, Aleksei Filippov, into Finland. Under cover as a journalist, he was sent on various intelligence assignments. This was the Soviets first attempt into international espionage (Andrew, Mitrokhin 24). After the end of the civil war, the Cheka was transferred to the control of the NKVD as the GPU (NKVD.org 1). During its time as the GPU, its mission was to infiltrate the groups of White Russians and Ukrainian nationals to try and destabilize them from within (Andrew and Mitrokhin 32). The GPU, after changing its name many times and switching from being independent or under NKVD control, was brought back under NKVD control as the GUGB after the German invasion (NKVD.org 2). When the Soviets started to push back the Germans, the GUGB regained its independence and became the NKGB. After World War II, Beria, a Politburo member and the ex-head of the MVD, united the NKVD and the NKGB into the MVD (2). After Beria was removed, the MVD was separated with the MVD keeping its original role and the new KGB taking control of state security (3). The i...

True and False Ranges
True and False Ranges True and False Ranges True and False Ranges By Maeve Maddox The combination fromto is often used to express a range of extremes, for example, ââ¬Å"the prices ranged from $1 to $20.â⬠A ââ¬Å"true rangeâ⬠requires a set of objects, persons, topics, or attributes in a limited set. Here are examples of the words fromto used to express measurable ranges: McDowell Mountain Regional Park has more than 50 miles of hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding trails, ranging from easy to strenuous and ranging from 0.5 mile to 15.4 miles.à Childhood is theà ageà spanà rangingà from birth to adolescence. [Carpenter ants] are large ants ranging in size from one-quarter inch for a worker ant to up to three-quarters inch for a queen. The course in novel writing covered everything from outlining to publication. Birth injuriesà range from mild to severe. A ââ¬Å"false rangeâ⬠links disparate items that do not belong in any kind of mutual set. For example: The topics will range from current events in the world and community, to self-expression and topics chosen by the students.à The movie has everything fromà comedy to love.à Free shipping on everything from handbags to jewelry [My list of favorites] has everything from Catholic High School Girls in Trouble to Zinc Oxide and You to A Fistful of Yen. Galileos offers everything from luscious wines to generous portions of your favorite Italian inspired food.à Festival has everything from a cake decorating to crocheted peanuts to jousting Such use of false ranges is ubiquitous. The usage rarely causes confusion in the reader, but it does reflect lazy thinking. Avoiding false ranges is easy. If you are not writing about the extremes of a setââ¬âlike money or ages, or steps in a processââ¬âdonââ¬â¢t use the word range or the phrase ââ¬Å"everything fromtoâ⬠Instead, use other words or expressions: The topics will encompass current events in the world and community, self-expression, and additional subjects chosen by the students.à The movie includes comedy and a love story.à Free shipping on all products. [My list of favorites] includes Catholic High School Girls in Trouble, Zinc Oxide and You, and A Fistful of Yen. Galileos offers luscious wines and generous portions of your favorite Italian-inspired food.à Festival features a variety of competitions that include cake decorating, peanut crocheting, and jousting. Note: The error of the false range is especially jarring when it contains more than two items: ââ¬Å"[Joeââ¬â¢s Place] offers everything fromà pizza to rack of lamb, to potato pancakes, to meatloaf.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Authentication Methods and Techniques Research Paper
Authentication Methods and Techniques - Research Paper Example In the simplest form of authentication, a person was authenticated by merely his/her physical appearance and voice as the authenticating party knew the person by face. As the personââ¬â¢s social circle increased, the need to be authenticated arose in environments where the person was unknown to the authenticating party. So the authentication method evolved and pictures were used in the authentication documents (such as passports, etc.). With time, the personal records and private information of a person increased not only in amount (as it became a requirement in schools, universities, offices, banks, airports, hospitals, ) but also in value (credit cards, debit cards, etc.). Means of authentication evolved significantly thereafter as with the availability of this information on public or private networks (e-banking, e-health, e-ticketing, e-commerce), the access points to this information also increased tremendously (on a public network the information is accessible to millions of Internet users all over the world). It was necessary that only the authorized personnel could access the information and so the authentication techniques relevant to the scenario and information worth would have to be brewed up. As the authentication methods progressed, so did the attacks aimed at stealing the private information (Mallow, n.d.). When an authentication method was compromised, an alternative strategy would be looked into for adapting to. This paper gives an overview of the various authentication methods that have been proposed in various applications and literature and have successfully been used for allowing controlled access to private information. The paper also discusses the vulnerability issues associated with each authentication method and assesses it against some important assessment factors. The paper also discusses how to decide the best authentication strategy while living amidst the sophisticated hackersââ¬â¢ realm. 2. Authentication Techniques and Meth ods As mentioned earlier, authentication involves providing a proof to the authority of oneââ¬â¢s identity. The various authentication techniques can be listed down into three broad categories; proof by knowledge techniques, proof by property techniques and proof by possession techniques (Jensen, 2003; Cranor & Garfinkel 2005). All authentication methods can be placed into one of these three techniques. The available authentication techniques and methods can be assessed keeping into consideration the major factors of cost, ease of installation, level of authentication and the usability. In this section the various authentication methods alongside their assessment based on these factors is discussed. A. Authentication by Knowledge This category of authentication is based on the fact that only the actual person himself can know some particular information. Examples include text based passwords or Personal Identification Number (PIN) and the response challenges. a. Passwords / PINs Benefits: This type of authentication is the least expensive of all methods as no specific software or hardware is required to set it up. Furthermore, the method is so easy that the users can easily set up or even change the passwords

Singal processing and linear systems + Matlab Essay
Singal processing and linear systems + Matlab - Essay Example The square wave response of a dynamic system measures how the dynamic system responds when a square wave is applied to its input. Generally a unit step function is applied defined by the following equation: Laplace transform and Fourier transform both are use for analysis of aperiodic signals. Laplace yields the result in s-domain where as Fourier transform yields it in frequency domain. Laplace is more often used because in s-domian it is easier to analyze the performance of the system by looking at the poles and the zeros. The Laplace transform is usually used in the context of one-sided signals, i.e. signals that are zero for all values ofà tà less than some value. Usually, this "start time" is set to zero, for convenience and without loss of generality, with the transform integral being taken from zero to infinity. The Fourier transform is used for analyzing systems that process signals that are infinite in extent, such as modulated sinusoids. (LTI) The signal is compared both in frequency and time domain, before and after filtering. As seen in the graphs the amplitude of the signal after filtering is 1. The amplitude thus decreases from 2 to 1, showing 3dB attenuation. In frequency domain the higher frequency coefficients are zero. They cover almost half the total bandwidth. Thus the half band filter has made half of the coefficients zero with 3dB

oppertunity costs :: essays research papers
In todayââ¬â¢s society, economic decisions made involve the concept of scarcity. There are ââ¬Å"opportunity costsâ⬠associated with any choice that you make. In order for an economy to produce more of one type of product, it will be forced to sacrifice units of production of another product. The shifting of resources from the production of one good to another involves increasing sacrifices of the first good in order to generate an equal increase of the second good. This is known as the ââ¬Å"law of increasing opportunity costs.â⬠The economic rational for the law of increasing opportunity costs is that economic resources are not completely adaptable to alternative uses. The opportunity cost of producing a product tends to increase as more of it is produced because resources less suitable to its production must be employed.à à à à à Prices are a measure of opportunity cost because they provide information about the value of one product in relation to another. à à à à à The shape of the Productions Possibility Frontier, (PPF), illustrates the principle of increasing opportunity costs (Graph 3). As more of one product is produced, increasingly larger amounts of the other product must be given up. In Graph 3, some factors of production are suited for producing both Product A and Product B, but as the production of one of the other brands increases, resources better suited to production of the other must be diverted. Producers of product A are not necessarily efficient producers of product B and just the opposite, so the opportunity cost increases as one moves toward either extreme on the curve of the production possibility frontier. If two products are very similar to one another, the production possibility frontier may be Dââ¬â¢Orlando 2 shaped more like a straight line (Graph 2). As an example, letââ¬â¢s say that two brands of wine are produced, Brand A and Brand B. These two brands of wine use the same grapes and the production process is the same. The only thing that is different is the name on the label. The same factors of production can produce either brand equally efficiently. If an increase in production of Brand B goes from 0 to 3 bottles, the production of Brand A must be decreased by 3 bottles. In this case, the two products are almost identical and can be produced equally efficiently using the same resources. The opportunity cost of producing one over the other remain constant between the two extremes
